Why Environmental Enthusiasts Love Lyocell Clothes

Why Environmental Enthusiasts Love Lyocell Clothes

As sustainable fashion becomes more popular and available for consumers globally, brands are working hard to find fabrics and materials that are better for the environment while also providing the quality in clothing that shoppers have come to expect from their favorite brands.

That’s how we discovered Lyocell. Here’s why we’re so excited about this fabric and why environmental enthusiasts are, too.

Tencel Lyocell is biodegradeable

Lyocell fabric is 100% biodegradable, derived from natural fibers harvested from the cellulose found in wood pulp. Products made from lyocell can be recycled, incinerated, and digested in sewage. Studies show the fiber typically degrades completely in around eight days in waste treatment plants.

Lyocell requires less chemical processing, less water during production, low energy intensity during manufacturing, and its production doesn’t result in any chemically-laden waste water.

The chemical processing of this fiber operates on a ‘closed loop’ system, and nearly 99% of the chemicals are ‘captured’ and reused for continuous processing.

Lyocell production consumes only about 1/10 to 1/20 of the water used in the production of cotton.

So, it's great for the environment. What about the fit and quality?

Glad you asked.

As a sustainable fashion brand, we (like many others) approach our clothing production with the hope that if we create better quality clothing options while also being mindful of the environment, two things will happen.

  1. Consumers will shop less because they have better options in quality and don’t need a ton of extra clothing just hanging in their closets.
  2. When consumers experience the fit and feel of items that were made eco-consciously, they will become more invested in conservation and will make a conscious effort to find other brands and businesses that adopt these same methods for manufacturing.

There are great quality items available that are also environmentally sustainable. We can have both. You just have to know where to look!

Lyocell Fit

Described as pleasantly smooth and firm, Lyocell fabric can be used in most clothing items because of its flattering fit and softness. It’s also suitable for sensitive skin and has great moisture absorption capabilities.

Sounds like the makings of the perfect casual tall tee, right?

It’s also antibacterial, which is great for the sweaty summer months where we’re all trying to stay cool and fresh. It is soft, lightweight, and comfortable enough to wear all day, no sweat. It’s a great option for relaxed clothing styles, as it is wrinkle-resistant and lays flat on the body—no billowing or pilling.

Lyocell Quality

Because Lyocell is an organic fabric, it’s durable but does require more care than the average synthetic t-shirt. The good news is Gentle Cycle does exist, so you can opt for that if hand washing is not high on your priority list. If you treat it right, it will outlast nearly any shirt in your closet.

Listen up.

If you’re going to shop for high-quality clothes (like ones made from Lyocell and other natural fibers) taking care of them is the next step in sustainability and decreasing your carbon footprint. Less laundry + better care of your clothing = less shopping and a happier Earth.

The manufacturing of lyocell fiber has significant environmental and ecological benefits, making environmental enthusiasts and experts in the field absolutely thrilled about this option for brands to use sustainable fabrics in their products.

If you’re on the hunt for eco-conscious brands, welcome to the revolution. We already know how tricky it can be shopping for sustainable clothes, and it gets even more complicated when you don’t fit in the standard XL at every department store.

Tall guys, we’ve got you covered on both fronts.
